THE ORIGIN OF AFRICAN EXFOLAITION
For centuries, Ghanaians used a “Sapo,” a natural loofah derived from a tree. It is a stringy and puffy sponge used for exfoliation.
And what happened was, during the late 70s and early 80s, someone, we don't know who this person is, actually discovered the cloth. They used it and shared it with their friends and family, and it actually became a thing in Ghana. We don't know where they came from or why they even felt compelled to try it, but it was pretty much genius.
The new cloth quickly gained popularity for its superior ability to clean the skin, remove dirt and dead skin, and leave the body luminous and smooth. It became a religiously used item by Ghanaians to luxuriate the skin in the shower.
That is the cloth that inspired LUV SCRUB.
Our Founder, Caroline, was introduced to this African net sponge by her mother when she was just five years old. She grew up using it as part of her everyday bathing routine and has continued to use it throughout her life.
Years later, while at a party in Brooklyn in 2011, someone complimented Caroline on her skin. She shared her little secret and was then encouraged to package and sell it. She gave it a try, and that was the beginning of LUV SCRUB.
LUV SCRUB elevated the traditional bathing cloth, introducing it to the beauty industry as the Mesh Body Exfoliator. A name that better represents its purpose. Combined with premium packaging, education, and an unwavering commitment to authenticity, LUV SCRUB brought this West African beauty ritual to a global audience. Now, LUV SCRUB is an award-winning brand recently recognized as Cosmopolitan's Holy Grail Beauty Award winner for Best Body Exfoliating Tool.
Today, you've probably noticed countless versions of the African net sponge appearing online and in stores. While it's exciting to see this bathing ritual gaining worldwide attention, it has also led to a flood of low-quality versions and imitations that don't reflect what Ghanaians have traditionally used.
